Panasonic has been pretty busy this year by launching new firmware updates for their full frame Mirrorless cameras. Another exciting news from Panasonic is the launch of their latest addition to the series; the Panasonic S5. The Mirrorless Digital Camera with 20-60mm Lens, shoots 5.9K ProRes RAW when paired with the Atomos Ninja V. The S5 is great for gimbal work, and for better low light.
The firmware updates from Panasonic include all the S series full frame Mirrorless ones like, the S1, S1H, S1R and S5. Interesting to note that few cameras from Micro Four Thirds series have also got new updates. These include models like the G9 and the G100/G110. There’s no ProRes RAW on the MFT cameras, though.
To shoot ProRes RAW on the Panasonic S5, you’ll need the Atomos Ninja V monitor recorder. But it will allow you to shoot 5.9K up to 30fps, 4K at 60fps and 3.5K anamorphic at 50fps in either ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ. This means that you can now get a full-frame setup capable of shooting 5.9K ProRes RAW for under $2,500! Now that’s a bargain!
As No Film School points out, ProRes RAW is rapidly becoming standard in raw workflows. It now has full support in Final Cut, Avid and Premiere Pro. Unfortunately, there’s still no support in DaVinci Resolve yet. But the users are hoping that something would come up in DaVinci Resolve 17.
Panasonic Firmware Updates
The new firmware updates for the Panasonic S1, S1H, S1R and S5 are available for download from the Panasonic website. To shoot ProRes RAW on the S5 with the Ninja V, you’ll need to also download AtomOS 10.55 from the Atomos website. The updates for the Panasonic G9 and G100/G110 are also available on the Panasonic website.
With Panasonic has releasing those updates Atomos has also done a few.
